{"id":294,"date":"2010-10-14T16:37:14","date_gmt":"2010-10-14T15:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lasunison.sc12.co.uk\/eblog\/?p=294"},"modified":"2010-10-14T16:37:14","modified_gmt":"2010-10-14T15:37:14","slug":"this-blogs-on-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ericsblog.lasunison.com\/?p=294","title":{"rendered":"This Blogs On Fire!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In my last blog (published on Thursday 7th October) I criticised the Chief Fire Officers suggestion at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham that they should take over, manage and run the Ambulance Service. <!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This week, on Monday 11th, four days later,\u00c2\u00a0an electrical\u00c2\u00a0fire\u00c2\u00a0in the basement of London Ambulance Waterloo\u00c2\u00a0Headquarters knocked out the whole of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) forcing staff to be moved to the fallback control at Bow! Spooky!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make your own minds up!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">____________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Join The Rally &amp; Lobby<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">19<sup>th<\/sup> October 2010 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As Part of the TUC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s campaign against the cuts a rally and lobby of Parliament are planned for 19<sup>th<\/sup> October 2010 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the day before the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR). Cuts are already hitting public services hard after the emergency budget in June, and on the 20<sup>th<\/sup> October 2010 the Chancellor will set out the details of the coalition\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s spending plans for the next three years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is important that we take a strong message to Westminster and the media on the 19<sup>th<\/sup> with a successful rally and lobby of Parliament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><strong>LAS UNISON will have a presence on the day and we would like as many people as possible to join us. This rally is the first of many activities planned in the build up to the National Demonstration in March 2011. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The National Health Service is not being &#8216;ring-fenced&#8217; by the Coalition government &#8211; it is being choked!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Please email\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:eddie.brand@lasunison.com\">eddie.brand@lasunison.com<\/a> \u00c2\u00a0to confirm your attendance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>____________________<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UNISON applied in August for a judicial review over what\u00c2\u00a0we believe\u00c2\u00a0is a lack of proper public consultation over the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s NHS reform proposals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The NHS has already been instructed to begin implementing some of the reforms before the official end of the\u00c2\u00a0White Paper<\/strong><strong>\u00c2\u00a0consultation period which was\u00c2\u00a0on\u00c2\u00a011th October.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u00c2\u00a0argued that\u00c2\u00a0the consultation needed to ask whether the reforms should go ahead at all, and\u00c2\u00a0pointed to\u00c2\u00a0a public right included in the\u00c2\u00a0NHS Constitution<\/strong><strong>\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u201c as well as how they should actually be introduced.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UNISON acted quickly and decisively to protect members interests within the\u00c2\u00a0Health Service.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately our challenge has not been successful. The following press release has just been released:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><\/strong><strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: THURSDAY 14 OCTOBER 2010<br \/>\nWHITE PAPER HIGH COURT DECISION \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u0153FIGHT FOR FUTURE OF NHS WON\u00e2\u20ac\u2122T STOP HERE\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nSAYS UNISON<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>UNISON, the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest public service union, said today (14 October) that its fight for the future of the NHS will \u00e2\u20ac\u0153go on\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, following the High Court\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision today, that the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Judicial Review was unsuccessful.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\nIn a positive move, the judge said it was perfectly proper for UNISON to seek \u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\na Judicial Review, saying that we had raised an important principle that was in the constitutional interest. \u00c2\u00a0However, Justice Mitting ruled that the court could not place a legal demand on the Government to consult the public, patients or staff over plans contained in its NHS White Paper.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Karen Jennings, UNISON Head of Health, said:<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision is disappointing, but the fight for the future of our NHS<br \/>\nwon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stop at the door to the court.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Judicial Review has exposed the charade of Government claims that it<br \/>\nwants to empower patients, the public and staff over how the NHS is run.<br \/>\nThe Government said in the White Paper &#8211; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no decision about me, without me\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\n&#8211; but when it comes to influencing the future of our NHS, clearly they think<br \/>\nthey can do without us all. \u00c2\u00a0The Secretary of State cannot say that he has<br \/>\nconsulted on the White Paper &#8211; the damaging ideas in it are all his own.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Taking the Judicial Review has successfully galvanised support from other<br \/>\nhealth bodies, patient groups, charities, academics and the public. \u00c2\u00a0We will<br \/>\nbe mobilising that support and making MPs acutely aware of the local and<br \/>\nnational opposition that their plans for the NHS have generated.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We will also be battling hard to make others aware of the full extent<\/em> of<br \/>\n<\/strong><em><strong>the \u00c2\u00a0impact of the wide-ranging proposals in the White Paper. It represents<br \/>\nthe most radical shake-up of the NHS in its entire history and yet there was<br \/>\nno mention of it in either the Conservative or Liberal Democrat manifestos.<br \/>\nIt threatens to turn our NHS into nothing more than a brand, a nice logo to<br \/>\nbe displayed outside increasingly privately run and owned hospitals,<br \/>\nwrestled from the health service.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>That is why the fight must go on.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>____________________<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00c2\u00a0<strong>The last time I counted there was about 15 private ambulance companies doing Patient Transport work in London: <em>Caring for You, Carillon, GSL (Global Solutions Limited), Chalfont Line, Medical Services, Savoy, Door to Door, Ecovert FM, M&amp;L, Charlton Cars, E-Zec, DHL, Highway Taxis, Kilo Taxis, OSL (Olympic Services Limited).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>In the current financial climate these, and more,\u00c2\u00a0are almost certain to\u00c2\u00a0aggressively pursue more contracts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>This is not just an issue for the Union, it is also an issue for local communities and local groups interested in their NHS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>When a London Ambulance Patient Transport contract is under threat in the future, the Union will work together with these groups to put pressure on the hospital trust to stick with the LAS and not add to the list above.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>London Ambulance PTS staff and management deserve all\u00c2\u00a0our support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>____________________<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>UNISON has played a major part in getting the agreement to offer Student Paramedic roles to our A&amp;E Support Staff. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>I wrote in the blog on 24th September that 48 places for A&amp;E Support Staff were made available on two separate Student Paramedic courses. This was to try and create a proper career pathway for our members.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>This depended, of course, on staff passing an assessment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Union has since\u00c2\u00a0heard from a number of concerned A&amp;E Support members regarding those assessments and we will be seeking to meet with the relevant managers to discuss those concerns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>We want A&amp;E Support Staff to be able to progress within the Service and it has to be on a level playing field.\u00c2\u00a0UNISON is committed to this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>____________________<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>It is really good that as I write this\u00c2\u00a0the Chilean mineworkers are slowly but surely being brought to the surface one by one\u00c2\u00a0after being trapped underground for 69 days. All should be safely out.
